Waterways is Fort McMurray’s most historic neighbourhood and was actively involved in the fur trade, then transportation, with a railway arriving in the 1920s. Situated along the Clearwater and Hangingstone Rivers, the inner-city acreage-style living on Draper Road and proximity to the river is still popular today.
The Early Days
As railways began to be built across the province in the late 1800s (the Canadian Pacific Railway reached Medicine Hat, Calgary and Banff in 1882–83) the Government of Alberta looked to build a railway from Edmonton to Fort McMurray in order to further stimulate resource development. The Alberta and Great Waterways Railway was incorporated in 1909, and after a false start and political mismanagement, broke ground in earnest in 1914. By 1921, the track had reached Deep Creek at the Clearwater River (now the community of Draper). In 1928, the track was extended further to the Hangingstone River and what would become Waterways, now a Fort McMurray neighbourhood (the railway was never extended to Fort McMurray proper). In 1929, the Alberta and Great Waterways Railway became a part of the Northern Alberta Railways.3
